Coach Code of Conduct

  1. Safety first. Player safety comes before winning, playing time, or any game outcome.

  2. Two-adult rule. I will not be alone with a player in a setting other adults can't observe. Practices, rides, and meetings include a second adult or happen in an open, visible space.

  3. Communication. Messages to players go through Stack Team App or include a parent or another coach. No private direct messages, texts, or social media contact with players.

  4. Transportation. I may drive players as part of a parent-arranged carpool. I will avoid driving a single player who isn’t my own child alone, unless requested by the player’s guardian.

  5. Respect. I will treat players, parents, officials, opponents, and fellow coaches with respect. No profanity directed at players, no physical punishment, and no humiliation.

  6. Substances. I will not use alcohol, cannabis, tobacco, or vaping products, or be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, while I am responsible for players. That includes practices, games, tournaments, team travel, and driving players.

  7. Fair process. I will follow program decisions on team selection and playing time, and I will raise concerns with the coaching coordinator, not with parents or players.

  8. Removal. I understand Future Spartans may suspend or remove a coach who violates this code.

Concussion Policy

Oregon law (ORS 417.875) requires every youth sports coach to complete concussion training each year and to follow these rules:

  • A player who shows signs of a concussion after a blow to the head or body, or who has been diagnosed with a concussion, may not practice or play the rest of that day.

  • The player may return no sooner than the next day, and only after they are symptom-free and have provided a written medical release from a qualified health care professional.

  • I will report any suspected concussion to Future Spartans leadership within 24 hours.

Required annual training: CDC HEADS UP to Youth Sports: Online Training for Coaches (free, about 30 minutes). Email your certificate to tylerhowk20@gmail.com.

Child Safety and Reporting

If I suspect a child is being abused or neglected, I will:

  1. Call 911 if the child is in immediate danger.

  2. Report to the Oregon Child Abuse Hotline at 1-855-503-SAFE (7233).

  3. Then notify Future Spartans leadership.

I will not investigate on my own or wait for permission to report. Telling Future Spartans does not replace a report to the hotline. Paid coaches are mandatory reporters under Oregon law, and Future Spartans asks all coaches to report.

Clearances and Training
