COACHING info
Every Future Spartans team is led by coaches from the Corvallis basketball community, including parents, former players, and local coaches who are passionate about the game and developing the next generation of players.
OUR COACHES
Our coaches are volunteers: parents of current and former players, CHS alumni who grew up in this program, and experienced local coaches. Each team has a head coach and at least one assistant.
Coaches are selected before the season begins and stay with their team from tryouts through the final tournament in February or March.
Many coaches have attended USA Basketball Youth Coaching clinics.
COACHING PHILOSOPHY
Our coaching philosophy is designed around player development. Coaches teach fundamentals, run organized practices, and make sure every athlete has the opportunity to reach their full potential and succeed playing high school basketball.
We hold coaches to the same standard we hold players: positive, accountable, and motivated to improve every week.
VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS
REQUIRED
BACKGROUND CHECK
Every coach and assistant passes a background check before working with athletes. The cost is covered by the program.
REQUIRED
SAFETY TRAINING
Concussion-awareness and youth-safety training, completed online before the first practice.
ENCOURAGED, NOT REQUIRED
COACHING EXPERIENCE
New coaches have access to practice plans, mentoring, and are paired with experienced coaches whenever possible.
NOT REQUIRED
A CHILD ON THE TEAM
Many coaches are parents, but CHS alumni and community members are just as welcome.
REQUIRED
TIME COMMITMENT
Two-three practices a week plus tournament weekends, November through February or March.
EXPECTED
SPORTSMANSHIP
Coaches model respect toward athletes, officials, and opponents at practice and at tournaments.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER
1. Reach out
Send us a note through the contact page with your name, coaching background (if any), and preferred grade group.
2. Meet the board
A short conversation with the Future Spartans board about expectations, philosophy, and where you'd fit best.
3. Clear background checks
Complete the background check and online safety training (we send the links and cover the costs).
4. Get your team
Coaching assignments are made before tryouts so you're on the floor from day one.
